Encouraging Victorians to Stay Safe

Department of Health VIC

Overview

At the start of the winter of 2022, the Victorian Department of Health was cautious of rising COVID-19 and flu cases.

In response, the Department launched the ‘Stay Well This Winter’ campaign, encouraging all Victorians to get their flu shot and stay up-to-date with their COVID-19 vaccinations.

Ethnolink has been a trusted provider of translation services to the Department since the start of the pandemic. For this campaign, we were proud to continue our work with the Department by translating and typesetting campaign collateral into 16 high-priority languages.

Challenge

One of the largest challenges with this project was transferring the unique layout and design of the source text across languages. In the English version, text of different heights and sizes were used for a more impactful, eye-catching design. However, this design style can be difficult to convert into other languages — particularly languages such as Chinese and Arabic.

To accommodate this design, our typesetters needed to work creatively to come up with an innovative solution.

Solution

Our typesetting team worked to create a unique solution for each language. For example, in the Chinese translation of the text, our team implemented a mixture of vertical and horizontal text to create an impactful in-language design.

In the case of the Arabic translation, increasing the height of Arabic text would look unnatural to native Arabic speakers. Our typesetters chose to extend it horizontally, instead, increasing its width. This gave it the same elongated appearance, mimicking the English source text’s design, whilst keeping it appropriate for the Arabic language.
